Synesthesia: Our Favorite Album Covers

A good album cover can inspire, astound and disturb, or at its best, make you want to purchase a record without ever hearing the music. As seen in Issue #39, on stands now, our expert reviewers have handpicked three of their favorite album covers of all time. The clear winners here are The Rolling Stones, with three mentions for three different albums, but The Velvet Underground and punk legends Dead Kennedys also come out on top. So, from the provocative nature of Chocolate and Cheese, to the now infamous London Calling, here are the reviewers’ picks.

*Since there are a lot more album covers out there than reviewers to pick them, we added a few more choice covers at the bottom. We felt there were several which definitely deserve a mention.

Seamonster, Oh Appalachia

Seamonster's latest album Two Birds was written and recorded by Adrian Todd Webb and friends in various tucked-away locales across Virginia over the course of three years. “Oh Appalachia,” is a surrealist poem against a backdrop of carnival noise and radio static echoing from the mountains, while “The Philosophy of Andy Warhol” is a gentle electro-pop call to calm based on journal entries of iconic artist Andy Warhol. Instrumental opener “New England” was recorded in a friend’s upstairs sewing room, “Bearsuit” when Webb lived in a laundry room in the slums, while “Annalee,” in which Webb’s vocals glide across churning beds of electro-folk psychedelia, was tracked in a haunted suburban bedroom not far from a giant trampoline.

The video for "Oh Appalachia," directed by Chad Hartigan, has a throwback, Endless Summer feel, thanks to its vintage-style camera work.

Band of Skulls, Friends

Even in the worst of times, there's always something that can turn the day around.  While all signs point to the bottom of a wine glass, a drag of that cigarette or even the midway point in a bag of fries, nothing can make a day truly 360 like the company of legit friends.

So the next time gratitude sneaks up on you and you find yourself owing a pal a hug or a a thank you, skip the hallmark moments and just play this Band of Skulls video.  ‘Cause nothing truly screams 'besties 4ever', better than reverb filled guitars from a trio of British bad asses.

"Friends" is available now on the juggernaut that is the Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Fri 26 Feb 2010 4:14 pm

We are very excited to announce details of the next Slices DVD, featuring a unique selection of interviews, features, videos and tech talk. This edition - the first of the new decade - sees us cozying up with techno's biggest superstar and all round EB hero - Carl Craig. To say we are excited about this would certainly be an understatement.

Elsewhere we have an interview with the master of beautifully hypnotic loops, Jochem Peteri aka Newworldaquarium. Kirk Degiorgio and Markus Nikolai share some of their thoughts, while Little Dragon and Siriusmo enlighten the Slices team on some of their musical secrets.

Our label feature looks at Sven Väth's immense Cocoon empire, and we get nitty gritty in the studio with Tobi Neumann. Music videos come courtesy of Khan, Headman Ft. Dieter Meier, Kasper Bjørke and Andreas Tilliander.

And finally, if that wasn't enough, musical goodness to fill your screen and ears, we have a new section on the DVD - EB Live & Rare. Here you can catch hard to find live footage of Junior Boys and Red Snapper.

Wow!

20 years on, Secret Cinema still strong

Mahatma Ghandi once said, “The only tyrant I accept in this world is the 'still small voice' within me." Jeroen Verheij aka Secret Cinema hasn't laid his life on the line for world peace, but he must know a thing or two about self-belief and dedication. For 20 years, the Dutchman has worked tirelessly behind the European techno scene, and remained, for the most part, in the shadows, perfecting his craft.

YouTube set to control laptop parties

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Fri 26 Feb 2010 3:16 pm

Great news for those who DJ with YouTube - you know who you are - the video channel has been testing a new feature that will seamlessly play videos one after the other - the YouTube Music Discovery Project.

Users can specify that a music clip will play automatically, thus reducing the hassle of fights over who dictates the next song. Users can also mix and match songs for their own playlist, allowing several hours of free music listening. YouTube’s logic behind the concept is to make sure users stay longer on the site, as the average person spends approximately 15 minutes per visit.

Many view this is a direct counter to the recent popularity of Muziic, a music video website that was started by Iowa teenager David Nelson. The framework of the site is similar to YouTube but treats video uploads more like MP3’s than videos.

One can only hope playlist fights will be a thing of the past…

Dust settles on Ellen Allien’s new album

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Fri 26 Feb 2010 2:37 pm

BPitch Control founder Ellen Allien has recently put the finishing touches to her fifth solo album. Having previously entered the studio with agf, Apparat and Holger Zilske, Berlin’s leading electronic lady has this time decided to forge a 10-track LP dubbed Dust alongside her friend Tobias Freund.

According to Allien, Dust will have a “warmer and more immediate feel” than 2008’s Sool and we can expect straightforward beats and discernible melodies to partner clear vocals.

Ellen Allien’s Dust is due to be released on BPitch Control on May 17, 2010.

Tracklist:
01. Our Utopie
02. Flashy Flashy
03. My Tree
04. Sun The Rain

06. Ever
07. You
08. Dream
09. Huibuh

Album of the Week: Pantha Du Prince ‘Black Noise’

Delivered... Posted by Philip Sherburne | Scene | Fri 26 Feb 2010 11:47 am
If you've ever seen Pantha Du Prince play live, or even in a photograph, you know that he's a darkly romantic character: strikingly handsome, with tousled blond hair and an unnervingly direct gaze. Like a poster boy for Rick Owens, his outfits suggest a dandy who has traveled from the future to our time via a detour through the 19th century: his long black overcoat dusts his shins, the folds of fabric as fluid as his music. It's hard to know where Pantha Du Prince, the character, ends, and Hendrik Weber—which is how the Berlin musician is known in civilian life—begins. When I meet Weber at his Kreuzberg studio, he doesn't look much different from when I had seen him on stage at Krakow's Unsound festival last fall. A black knitted cardigan, belted about the waist, hangs almost to the floor; a royal blue silk scarf is knotted tightly around his neck. His studio looks like the typical artist's garret, with an unmade bed like an island in a sea of bohemian bric-a-brac. Every corner of the room is covered with dusty vinyl LPs, musical equipment, books on philosophy, and scraps of avant-garde fashion. Pantha Du Prince's new album, 'Black Noise' (click here for the US edition, and here for the rest of the world), represents not just a continuation of the image the artist has created, but an intensification. Sonically, it bears much in common with his previous two albums for Hamburg's Dial label, 'Diamond Days' and 'This Bliss'. Atop drum programming as dry and brittle as kindling, he drapes gauzy, suggestive layers of melancholic melodies; deep analog basslines are both driving and yearning. The result is an unlikely middle ground between pensive ambient music, and jacking, body-moving house.
