Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Official Trailer

Adorably aloof nerd posterboy Michael Cera returns to screens this summer, charming and jobless in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Pilgim, a bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob—omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams in Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The twentysomething is up for quite screening process, however, as her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Her league of former flames control her love life, and only by picking them off one by one, can Pilgrim truly claim his "perfect woman." As per usual with Cera flicks, awkward hilarity will most likely ensue.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World hits theaters August 13th.

The Temper Trap, Sweet Disposition

Aussie rockers The Temper Trap have returned from a very successful stint at SXSW, and are celebrating it with a brand-new, destruction-laden US video for “Sweet Disposition.” Taking a page out of The Who’s playbook, the guys unleash their frustrations on each instrument in their arsenal. The video is followed by special behind-the-scenes footage, featuring each band member’s preparation for their demolition tactics. According to the footage, bass player Jonny Aherne took perhaps the most daunting approach, sustaining a minor head injury while filming his portion! Check out the video, and be sure to catch the guys on their current tour. Conditions is out now, via Columbia.

A Collection of Curious Sound Objects

FINE COLLECTION OF CURIOUS SOUND OBJECTS from Georg Reil on Vimeo.

Commentary would spoil the video above, but to me it’s a reminder of the power of theater in all we do with technology and musical objects.

The arrangement includes six exceptional exhibits from the world of sounds and acoustics. At first sight looking trivial, each object incorporates a very unique ability.

The magical character of each object is accompanied with a little story, almost completely concealing the existence of technical components such as speakers or sensors. Only small connection ports as well as the uniform black finishing point to thier unusual abilities.

In form and functionalty all these exhibits pursue John Maeda’s „Simplicity“. They are enjoying to use, they are surprising and one wants to explore and investigate them.

The designs are a project by Georg Reil and Kathy Scheuring, University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. Built with Processing and Arduino (naturally).

Return of a Classic: R&S Records

Delivered... Posted by Philip Sherburne | Scene | Fri 26 Mar 2010 4:00 pm
There aren't many labels with a history as deep or rich as that of R&S Records. Founded in 1984 by Renaat Vandepapelier and Sabine Maes, R&S defined some of the most important sounds of the '90s, with a roster including Joey Beltram, Model 500, Aphex Twin, Jam & Spoon, and many more. Based in Belgium, R&S and its equally influential ambient sub-label, Apollo, were instrumental in bringing together sounds from around the world, reflecting electronic music's global spread and mutable essence. Hard techno, deep house, drum & bass, ambient, IDM, downtempo and even avant-pop all found a home under R&S' roomy umbrella. Lying low for most of the '00s, R&S revived in 2008 with a series of classic reissues, and in 2009, with new A&R from London's Dan Foat and Andy Whittaker, they began the next phase of their journey. Amidst the material released since then, dancefloor smashers from Radio Slave and the Chain alternate with more eclectic fare from Delphic and Cortney Tidwell, reflecting the label's diverse tastes (and tight quality control). We asked Renaat and Dan to highlight some key releases from the label's past, present and future. Read on for their comments, audio samples, and some droolworthy announcements, including news about the forthcoming debut artist album from one of French house's most legendary producers.

Words cannot express how happy we are that Beatportal won Best Dance Music Website at the 2010 International Dance Music Awards (IDMAs) last night in Miami. We are truly humbled that so many of our users came out and voted for us, especially considering the tough competition we were up against. It's Beatportal's first ever award and I'll admit that I even shed a tear or two when I heard the news.

Album of the Week: Scuba ‘Triangulation’

Delivered... Posted by Philip Sherburne | Scene | Fri 26 Mar 2010 1:23 pm
Club music often breaks down into binaries -- the stuff that rides a 4/4 beat inherited from house and techno on the one hand, and pretty much everything else on the other: breakbeats, drum & bass, dubstep, U.K. garage, all children of the tradition often termed the "hardcore continuum", in reference to its relation to British breakbeat hardcore. But Scuba -- aka Paul Rose, a Londoner based for the past three years in Berlin -- is looking for a third way, one that fuses both great strains of club music into something that's not either/or, but both/and. He makes that quest explicit with the title of his second album, 'Triangulation'.
