Ambient Upsurge: Matthew Hawtin’s ‘Once Again, Again’

Can you hear something stirring? The incidental melodies of birdsong, the burble of running water… maybe it's just the sound of springtime. Or could it be an ambient revival? There are certainly plenty of signs of the latter, from the underground to the mainstream. Moby recently released his 2009 album 'Wait for Me' in a special 'Ambient Edition'. Basement Jaxx's 'Zephyr', while not exactly ambient, is certainly a return to the chillout room. The Black Dog are about to release 'Music for Real Airports', a semi-polemical response to Brian Eno's seminal 'Music for Airports'. Whether this amounts to a revival or just a blip, old-school ambient heads are bound to feel nostalgic over 'Once Again, Again', Matthew Hawtin's new ambient mix for Plus 8.

Q&A: Hockey

The ‘80s are everywhere – from the Miami Vice pastel t-shirts at Urban Outfitters to Hot Tub Time Machine at the movie theater and the John Hughes tribute at the Oscars. Regardless of whether this is inspired by the nostalgia of the generation who lived through it or the fascination of the younger generation that is just discovering it, the ‘80s are on everyone’s mind. Listening to Hockey’s debut, Mind Chaos, makes you feel like we’re still there. Blending Blondie’s beats, Dire Straits’ swing and Talking Heads’ bounce, the West Coast fivesome – singer Ben Grubin, guitarist Brian White, drummer Anthony Stassi, bassist Jeremy Reynolds, and keyboardist Ryan Dolliver – have crafted a catchier-than-H1N1 collection of retrofit tunes that manage to sound both clever and contemporary. It’s a success story that almost didn’t happen, because the band got signed in 2007 and started recording with Jerry Harrison, before getting dumped and left for dead. Dispirited, but unwilling to give up, the group moved to Portland, Oregon, and wrote what became Mind Chaos in a few months of frantic creativity. The delayed debut was well worth the wait, because songs as poppy as “Song Away” and “Learn to Lose” are harder to find than Frankie Goes To Hollywood 45's. We caught up with Grubin in the midst of the band’s current US tour, which runs through the middle of April.

Moving out to Portland seemed to really help coalesce the band, huh?

Ben Grubin: We got there without jobs, so we spent two months down in a basement crafting songs. It was just a ten by ten box in an industrial part of the city with damp cement everywhere. We had to put carpet down, but even then it wasn’t very glamorous.

How odd is it to hear those basement demos on the radio?

When I take a big step back, it’s cool to think that we were able pull it off. Who’d have thought that was going to happen? At the time, I certainly had no idea where we would end up. There were only three of us then, which really affected the songs we wrote. We kept it very minimalist. There were no big keyboard lines or big guitar lines, because we didn’t have a big band then.

Does that mean that the next record going to have an orchestra and 87 layers of guitars on it?

We’re going to use what we have; now that there are five of us playing. Mind Chaos is very driven by vocal hooks and rhythmic hooks with very few instrumental hooks. I’m sure we’ll end up doing some weird stuff that will surprise even us.

There are a lot of ‘80s influences on Mind Chaos. Is that the music you grew up on?

The main thing for me in high school was rap and hip-hop. The ‘80’s influence came into play when we went to college. We wanted to play parties where the vibe was about having fun and contributing to the crazy atmosphere. So we gravitated towards the signature sounds that people have at parties – big choruses and drum machines. We still write with our live show in mind, because we want people to party with us.

There’s a lyric “I want to sing a truthful song over an ‘80’s groove” on “Song Away.” Was that what you set out to do when you wrote that song?

That song is a total confrontation of the moment. One of my favorite books growing up was Jack Kerouac’s The Subterraneans, because it was about his whole life, including his struggle to be a writer. On “Song Away,” I put it all out there and it felt really honest to write like that. Maybe you’re not supposed to write songs about writing songs, but that’s what I did. F

Warner Music starts hiring anti piracy interns

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Wed 31 Mar 2010 12:52 pm

We recently learnt of some new insidious tactics by Warner Records Entertainment UK in order to stamp out copyright infringement and piracy. The Guardian recently reported that the major record label was actively on the look out for an ‘anti-piracy’ intern for its London offices.

What does this exactly mean?

Well, duties for the lucky employee would include "making ‘trap’ purchases of illegal material, to issue copyright infringement notices, and even to develop automated bots that will scan for pirated files.” The advertisement for the position was displayed on the University of Manchester career website and to be honest, reeks of McCarthy-era paranoia.

Could this be the start of a new malicious battle against downloader’s across the world? We all know this is a rather losing battle for the corporate giants, efforts like these reveal just how desperate the situation is.

Oh yeah and we forgot; for those of you who want to apply, the cut off date is today (31.03) and the remuneration is £17,500, plus bonuses for people downloading Enya (jokes).

Actress to put out Splazsh

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Wed 31 Mar 2010 11:19 am

Darren Cunningham, better known by the formidable alias of Actress, will be issuing his second album Splazsh in May.

Sending tremors through the dance community the first time ‘round, Actress’ debut album Hazyville combined a hypnotic mishmash of dark clinical techno and mysterious melodies, winning critics over everywhere.

As we originally reported in October, he had signed up to Honest Jon’s, moving on from his former self-run label Werk Discs. Since Werk’s inception in 2004, he’s pressed up Zomby’s absolute classic Where Were U In '92?, made a massive remix for Joy Orbison and signed Lone and Lukid in the process. How’s that for occupied?

Cunningham told Resident Advisor that his new record is “blocky and dispersively fragmented." We're damn excited for this. However, we'd love to know the deal with the title on track 13... anyone?

Tracklist:

01. Hubble
02. Lost
03. Futureproofing
04. Bubble Butts And Equations
05. Always Human
06. Get Ohn (Fairlight Mix)
07. Maze
08. Purrple
09. Splazsh
10. Senorita
11. Let’s Fly
12. Wrong Potion
13. Supreme Cunnilingus
14. The Kettle Men
15. Casanova

Actress will put out Splazsh on May 17th, 2010.

Thinking of Settlement in NCE Window? Do It Now as More FCC Point System Decisions are on Their Way

Delivered... David Oxenford | Scene | Wed 31 Mar 2010 2:44 am

Last week, we wrote about a Commission decision that said that only one application in a noncommercial MX Group can be granted even if, when the first is granted, there are other applications in that group that would not be mutually exclusive with (i.e. would not create any prohibited interference to) the winning applicant.  While multiple applicants can be granted out of an MX Group if there is a settlement, only one application will be granted when the point system analysis is performed. Well - if you have an application still pending in the 2007 NCE Window and were contemplating a settlement, now is the time to do it.  In February, the Commission released an order deciding the winner in 59 different MX groups.  A second such decision is now circulating among the Commissioners for approval, and we hear that a third will soon follow as the FCC accelerates its review of the remaining applications from the 2007 window. Once these orders are released by the Commission, there is no more chance to settle any case decided in such an order, and thus only one application from any group will be granted.  So, if you are planning a settlement, do it now.

BLOG: The Black Keys Unveil Internet Awesomeness

Move over, Keyboard Cat. There's a new musically inclined creature on the scene, courtesy of Akron rockers The Black Keys, and his name is Frank. Frank the Funkasuarus. The guys have released a new, unofficial video for "Tighten Up," and in doing so, have eased their way in as my favorite youtube video. You combine blues-y gritty rock & smooth-movin' dinosaurs? It's a can't miss in this girl's book (an albeit nerdy one, as it were). So, check it out below, and be sure to read the scroll. Frank is on the prowl for some puppet-loving ladies. I might just have to jump back to the Jurassic era. Frank moves pretty good.
