Discover The Undiscovered: Young Mammals

Young Mammals make their debut with a ten song burst of youthful exuberance. Their album, Carrots, immediately creates an energy that holds on throughout the release. Driving rhythms push through to crescendos of patience testing volume only to be released by gentle landings just a few moments ahead. This work shows the many sides of their creative output thus far, and hopes to bring listeners along in the ups and downs that Carrots lays out before them.

Brothers Carlos and Jose Sanchez, Cley Miller, and Ryan Chavez comprise Young Mammals. Their performances display an undeniable chemistry that has been nurtured through a long friendship and brotherhood. This bond has guided them into an unspoiled approach completely their own and is instantly apparent to the audiences that have taken to them nationally in the brief period following Carrots' release.

19 – NEW YORK, NY : The Living Room (daytime)
22 – BROOKLYN, NY : Spike Hill (daytime)

Who are your main influences?

The main influences for starting the band will probably always make their way in to Young Mammals... Television, Pixies, The Walkmen, The Flaming Lips... A bunch of albums we heard growing up with a distinct atmosphere that makes each of them exciting years after first hearing them. Lately, a lot of our friends have been inspiring the hell out of us... Balaclavas, Lower Dens.

How did you meet?

Carlos and Jose met Cley in high school and convinced him to start a band with them.

What is your biggest achievement as a band to date?

Absolutely, finishing and releasing our LP, Carrots.

Where did the band name originate?

Out of necessity. We received a cease and desist order to change our name and, with the help of some friends, decided on Young Mammals. There's some Houstonians with a definite knack for naming bands (Roy Mata: Black Congress, Fatal Flying Guilloteens, etc.)

Favorite Bands?

Other than the ones already named: Talking Heads, The Zombies, Thee Oh Sees, The Beach Boys, Brian Eno, The Meters, Deerhoof, D'Angelo. Lately: Twin Sister, Weird Weeds, and Warpaint have totally blown our minds.

Plans to Tour?

We're heading out this week for the west coast for the first time. We went out to the east coast earlier this summer and will return for CMJ in October.

Plans for next release?

We're recording our newest batch of songs now for a 2011 release.

Ben Folds, From Above

Ben Folds decided to team up with writer Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, Fever Pitch, About a Boy), to help write lyrics for his new album, Lonely Avenue. Below we have the first video for the album titled "From Above."

The clip is an animated tale (with help from Julius Preite of the The Simpsons fame) about two characters that cross paths many times in life but can never seem to get the "soul mate" feeling to go away. It’s a quirky little video that has a fairly serious underlying message.

Check out the video below.

Last piece of Bar 25 on eBay

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Wed 29 Sep 2010 4:27 pm

It was only a matter of time before this would happen - the creative minds behind Bar 25 are selling the last remnants of the iconic club. If you scan on eBay you will find the last chunk of Bar 25. With already 12 bids and the price hiking towards 101 euro, people still want a slice of the club’s nostalgia. In case you want to make a bid you have until October 2nd and we suggest to lurk around and place a bid in the last minute. Have a look at the item below:

Screen shot 2010-09-29 at 4.58.59 PM

We are all too familiar with the Bar 25’s never-ending saga of openings and closings. Partygoers have grown to love (or avoid) the trash circus that hugs Berlin’s Spree bank and unfortunately, as you all know, the club will finally close. Tears have been shed yet all good things must come to an end.

A day in the life of Diplo

Delivered... Posted by Beatportal | Scene | Wed 29 Sep 2010 3:51 pm
The documentary-film project 8 Billion Lives turns its lens on Diplo for its new installment. The Swedish filmmaker Wing-Yee captures a day in the DJ's life in the 10-minute short, putting an unusual spin on the typical tour doc. Shot in black and white, it's an intentionally understated snapshot of the DJ in action, focusing less on the limelight than on the downtime—the hotel, the taxi, the airport. Diplo's own voiceover gives the narration a low-key, conversational style; it's hard to imagine a more candid portrait of an artist who's better known for Mad Decent's madcap antics. For the side of Diplo you may be more familiar with, keep reading and check out his September Top 10, featuring tunes from Bonobo, Borgore, Bart B More, and more—plus Justin Martin and Ardalan's absolutely ubiquitous (and deservedly so!) "Mr. Spock."

Tensnake is in the house

Delivered... Posted by Kornel Koch | Scene | Wed 29 Sep 2010 3:08 pm
Tensnake might be this year's unlikeliest crossover success story, going from one of the underground's best-kept secrets to emissary of the Defected empire practically overnight, all on the strength of his tune "Coma Cat." The Hamburg-based musician, real name Marco Niemerski, got his start a few years ago with a handful of EPs for Mirau Musik, the label he cofounded with Stephan Lorenz and Maik Pallasch. His records as Arp Aubert, a duo with Lorenz, were dusky, minimalist house vaguely in the vein of Hamburg's Dial Records label. But his solo productions as Tensnake suggested a slightly different sensibility, drawing from '90s house classics as well as '80s electronic disco, warm and chilly all at once. By 2008 he was developing his style on records for labels like Endless Flight, Mule Musiq, and Permanent Vacation. He had a runaway underground hit in 2009 with "In the End (I Want You to Cry)," for Gerd Jansson's Running Back label, and then in January of this year he snapped everyone to attention with "Coma Cat," a brilliant slice of vocal R&B with shades of both freestyle and Metro Area. Within months, Defected had snagged the single, and suddenly it was everywhere, helping pave the way into mainstream club play for likeminded slow-motion adepts like Soul Clap and the Wolf + Lamb crew. To coincide with his new, double-length Tensnake in the House mix, the Defected blog has posted a worthwhile interview with the artist which touches on his retro tastes and his pop predilections. As for the mix, it's exactly what you might expect from Tensnake—in the best way—packed with leftfield gems from the likes of Mugwump, W+L's Zev, Al Usher & Prins Thomas, Jamie Jones, and even Mount Kimbie, along with classic tunes like Armando's "Don't Take It" and Carol Williams' "Can't Get Away (From Your Love)." Disc one is downtempo, and disc two is geared towards the party; both are as fresh as a spring breeze off the Baltic Sea. Check out the album, plus samplers for Tensnake and Mirau Musik, after the jump.

Wbeeza preps debut album

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Wed 29 Sep 2010 2:04 pm

British house producer Wbeeza, who we featured as in our Ones to Watch column last month, is about to drop his debut album on Third Ear Recordings. Having released three EP's already for the label, Void is a collection of previously unreleased gems from the Peckham based producer.

Vinly fans may be dissapointed though, as unususally for a relatively underground house act, the album will be only avalible as continuous mix CD or via individual downloads. There are rumours of some 12"'s in the new year, but at the moment, they are just that.

Third Ear will release Void on November 22, 2010.

Berlin Festival presents an ‘encore’

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Wed 29 Sep 2010 11:20 am

After the way Berlin Festival ended on the 10th and 11th of September, the organizers have come up with a novel idea for those that missed out on headliners Fatboy Slim and 2 Many DJ's. They will be throwing an encore event at Berlin's Arena on the 8th of December.

After concerns of overcrowding were cited at the festival of 15,000, organizers and police both decided to shut down the festival early. The organisers even set up a Facebook page to find a resolution for the issue.

Direct from the press release, organizers were keen to present their upbeat solution :

"It’s been two weeks since Berlin Festival 2010 ended. Despite ambivalent resonance by some in the immediate aftermath of the festival, positive resonance remains in the press and with the artists participating."

So the deal is, all festival goers that were originally at Berlin Festival can go to this event for free, as long as you have an original wristband, all you have to do is register here before November 1st.
