Iceland: Ride the Airwaves

Hot off the international excitement of the Culture Collide Festival in Los Angeles, this New Yorker’s next stop was to head far north to cool down at Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavík for the weekend. With over 100 bands performing around the center of the city, the subarctic festival provided a one-of-a-kind getaway in the land of Vikings, volcanoes, hot springs and, of course, great music.

First off, dear traveler, it’s not as difficult to get to the island as you might think; the journey on an Icelandair flight from New York City lasts about as long as a bus ride to Boston. And because of the recent economic collapse, the price of everything has gone down, so taking in the local sights won't break your bank. The cheap Viking beer at Kaffibarinn was easier (and tastier) to swallow than a five-dollar High Life at home, and although the famous Blue Lagoon (a geothermal spa—as in, heated by a nearby lava flow) is now priced in euros, it’s still a must-visit.

For the duration of the extended weekend, the well-organized festival featured an eclectic array of Icelandic talent such as Amiina and soon-to-be-your-favorite-new-artist Lára, rounding out a diverse lineup that boasted Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projectors), Dan Deacon, Hercules and Love Affair, James Blake, Nive Nielsen and The Deer Children, The Antlers, and Toro Y Moi. The FILTER stage at Venue (yep, that’s the name of the spot) on Saturday night kicked off with Iceland’s own The Esoteric Gender, and by the time Neon Indian hit the stage, the room was completely full and stayed that way ’til the end—at around four a.m. After the show, I was in need of a serious late-night bite and was directed to a local culinary treasure: the most popular restaurant in all of Iceland, a 70-year-old hot-dog stand called Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. Who knew?

One important thing I took away from the trip: Icelandic people have a saying that if you don’t like the weather just wait 15 minutes, because sun and rain tends to alternate several times per day with little warning. So, while you can’t rely on Icelandic forecasts, you can count on local friendliness, the people’s inherent love of good music and an enthusiastic, celebratory (but only on the weekend) lifestyle. Takk for everything!    F

Ariel Pink, Round and Round

What do you get when you combine Ariel Pink and Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips? A fuzzed out, up-close, homemade music video for "Round and Round."

Coyne filmed the video on his iPhone and it shows Pink backed by his Haunted Graffiti band performing the tune. The beginning of the video shows Pink's toes in a bowl of "breast milk of 30 women" according to Coyne. I don't really get that connection, but there it is.

Check it out below.

You can also download the video here which apparently looks better than what Vimeo can handle.

Kinect with MIDI, with Microsoft’s 3D Camera

Delivered... Peter Kirn | Scene,This & That | Fri 19 Nov 2010 7:25 pm

Ben Tan X writes to let us know he’s working with hacks for Microsoft’s Kinect 3D camera system for Xbox to perform MIDI control. Result: depth-sensing, gestural musical manipulations! It’s just a prototype, but since today I cover the larger landscape of what’s happening with Kinect, it’s well worth teasing. From the description:

Coded in C#.net using this: http://codelaboratories.com/nui

Very hacky ugly, yucky, alpha prototype, source code available here:
http://benxtan.com/temp/pmidickinect.zip

Next project is making a version of pmidic that uses Kinect. Then, you can control Ableton Live or any other MIDI software or hardware with you limbs. Isn’t that amazing!!!

If you are interested, you should also check out:
http://pmidic.sourceforge.net/

He tells me, “It’s just proof of concept for now, but want to make something nicer in the long run :) The community on IRC for this stuff is great. Very supportive. I love all the hacking going on at the moment. Especially after watching the Social Network. Very inspiring!”

So, what’s this whole Kinect thing about, why should you care, why might it be useful to artists and musicians and designers generally, and where do you go to find the code? I’ve rounded up various hackers working on the project to answer those questions on Create Digital Motion (in this case, Capture Digital Motion):

Focus on Poland: SLG

Based in Łodz, SLG (Łukasz Seliga) got his start five years ago, releasing on labels like Level Records, Trenton Records, and particularly Trapez, for whom he's turned out more than half a dozen records over the years. He's known for his jacking, swing-infused tech-house style, influenced by artists like DBX and Akufen; his dynamic, evolving tracks reflect his extensive experience performing live. As of this summer, SLG has taken a deeper turn; his Dad's Records EP, for Catz 'n Dogz' Pets Recordings, is a heavy groover full of disco samples, dreamy vox, and immaculate filter action. We caught up with the Polish producer for our latest installment of the Focus on Poland series.

Album of the Week: Seph, “Alquimia”

Delivered... Posted by Beatportal | Scene | Fri 19 Nov 2010 3:10 pm
Unlike a lot of labels, Jeremy Caulfield's Dumb Unit doesn't churn out new product just because; one of the reasons they've weathered 10 years in the trenches is their favorable quality-to-quantity ratio. Moreover, they've got a refreshing faith in their own vision. While so many former minimal-techno types are scurrying to shore up their deep-house bona fides, Dumb Unit keeps pushing forward with its own particular brand of futurist electronic funk. With the release of Alquimia, Dumb Unit extends its strategy to artist-album territory. Alquimia is the debut longplayer from Argentina's Seph, and it offers a careful balancing act between club functionalism and the more circuitous explorations facilitated by the extended format. The core of the album is a set of tight, percussive, sonically dazzling tech-house workouts, but they're complemented with ambient experiments and tricky asides in a way that heightens the experience of the album as a whole. DJs can (and should!) cherry-pick Seph's weird, opalescent grooves to their hearts' content: tracks like "Alquimia," "Casualidad," "361 Grados" and "Runas" are heavy, psychedelic, late-night jams, arrayed with sensual, shimmering bell-tone frequencies. But this is also an album that rewards extended (and repeated) listens. We caught up with Seph, who's been releasing records for five years now, to find out about his background; read on for a peek into the musical alchemist's lab.
