Utterly Brilliant Fan-Made Jonathan Coulton Music Video, with Lilypad Notation Cameo

Delivered... Peter Kirn | Scene,This & That | Tue 7 Dec 2010 8:24 pm

Shop Vac from Jarret Heather on Vimeo.

Jonathan Coulton is nothing if not a hero for the age of Internet music. The Brooklyn-based troubadour inspires worldwide adoration from fans, not least in the form of music videos made spontaneously for his songs. “Shop Vac” by Jarrett Heather is easily one of the cleverest music videos put out this year, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with professional, higher-budget, commissioned videos. (And in a year full of clever gimmicks, that’s saying a lot.) It also does more than just show off visual flash: it’s got some actual wit.

More info from the creator:

A kinetic typography music video for Jonathan Coulton’s Shop Vac. Created using After Effects, Toon Boom Animate, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere.

As such, I almost put it under the “motion” heading, but for one important cameo: in the best appearance by music notation in a music video in recent memory, there’s a kick-a** notation “solo” in the middle. And yes, music notation is still damned sexy after all these centuries.

Jarret says he made that flourish with LilyPond, the brilliant, fully open-source notation engraving standard about which I raved early this year.

Not that it matters. I’d take any excuse to show this video, or watch it again. And remember, comment trolls, say what you like – I’ll just turn on my Shop-Vac.

Thanks, Wheat Williams, for the tip!

Tyrell, Web Community-Imagined Synth, Will Be a Real (Soft) Synth

Delivered... Peter Kirn | Scene | Tue 7 Dec 2010 8:10 pm

Another gorgeous render by Stephan Gries. I could live in a virtual reality studio made by this guy.

At the very least, Tyrell, the synthesizer dreamt up by readers of the website Amazona.de, will be realised in software form – and it might inspire a hardware module, too. That’s the word from Peter Grandl from Amazona, who writes:

our project TYRELL will become reality. :-) ))
First as a Software Synthesizer, programmed by U-He (from the inventors of ZEBRA 2) and hopefully later as an analog hardware device.

Urs Heckman (see picture) is working on a Synth-project called DIVA. One part of the project is developing a module which is based on the ROLAND Juno 60. Exactly this synth was also the base for the AMAZONA.de Reader-Survey. Now, Urs will bring both ideas together and will create TYRELL – N6 as the first TYRELL Clone.

Since the last letter we have been contacted by three companies from Europe and China. Each of these companies has expressed interest to realize TYRELL.

PS: BTW – the Software Version of U-He will be free of charge for amazona.de readers. We expected a beta-version before Christmas this year!!

As a huge fan of Urs’ development work, color me interested – and DIVA itself is sounding a fascinating project. So what may have begun as hardware dreams could wind up being more interesting as software. In fact, building this as a controller wouldn’t be unimaginable. (Come on, I have to anger analog hardware die-hards at least some of the time, or I’m not going to live up to the name of this site.)

Speaking of hardware, though, have a look at the slick, new design look. Stephan Gries tells me the rendering engine he’s using with the Rhino modeler is Maxwell, since a number of people asked. (In a first draft, I wrote that the models were “rendered” in Rhino; it’s really that they were modeled in Rhino and rendered in Maxwell.)

Urs Heckmann.

BROWNOUT – ‘AGUILAS AND COBRAS REMIXED AND REGROOVED’

Delivered... globalnoize | Scene | Tue 7 Dec 2010 7:59 pm

FREE DOWNLOAD – Brownout – Olvidalo (J-Boogie Drumapella Remix)

Listen/Buy Brownout – ‘AGUILAS AND COBRAS REMIXED AND REGROOVED’ from iTunes/Amazon/Six Degrees Store

Brownout, the Psychedelic Latin Funk alter ego of Grupo Fantasma, heated up dance-floors and critic’s lists around the world with last year’s Aguilas & Cobras record. The group’s trademark soulful beats, psychedelic guitar excursions, tough grooves and ultra-tight horn arrangements have now been handed over to a dream team of remixers from the electronic dance, funk, cumbia & nu-groove scene, resulting in Aguilas & Cobras Remixed & Re-Grooved. Remixers include J Boogie, The Mexican Dubwiser, Tal M. Klein, Kokolo’s Ray Lugo, Second Sky & Thomas Blondet, Jeremy Sole, Senor Oz, Afrolicious, Anthony Mansfield, Grant Phabao & CaZ.

There is also a limited edition hand numbered cd available at the Six Degrees Shop and at Brownout live shows, which is still the best place to hear this fiery band!

Our curiosity piqued after 9West dropped their latest single for Dessous, we tracked down the Greek duo of George exarchos and Kostas Tikis to learn more about the duo. Their high-quality sound is techy and deep, and their productions are making noise. Their latest, the Shapes EP, showcases a fresh new sound that's advanced considerably from their releases on Iboga back in 2007.

Isolée preps Well Spent Youth album for Pampa

Delivered... electronic beats NEWS as RSS-Feed | Scene | Tue 7 Dec 2010 6:09 pm

Isolée is one of those artists, who in our books, is quite underrated these days. As an artist and remixer he has been responsible for some unbelievable basement monsters and deep house jams, yet he hasn’t quite reached the level of success we feel his productions make him worthy of.

However, we think all that will change with his third studio album – Well Spent Youth.

Isolée describes Well Spent Youth as a “a chameleon; it assumes different forms depending on the volume it’s played. Tunes like ‘Taktell,’ ‘Thirteen Times An Hour,’ ‘Hold On,’ ‘One Box”’ and ‘Celeste’ set the club on fire, quickly spreading the unique, indescribable Isolée vibe, which imbues the often cold, bleak dance floor with a unique, clever color. The collective joy at being challenged is ubiquitous.”

For those who have let the brilliance of Isolée slip your mind, here are a few videos to remind you:

Well Spent Youth is available February 7th on Pampa Recordings.
