Q&A: The Submarines Interview Pepper Rabbit Interviewing The Submarines (FILTER Exclusive)

LA indie poppers The Submarines and fellow city dwellers Pepper Rabbit have been touring together for a few weeks. FILTER wanted to do an interview with the bands but rather than us conducting the interview, we let the bands turn the mics on each other.

Below, you can read the flip flopped interviews before you head out to their show tomorrow night at LA's The Troubadour, presented by FILTER!

Click Here to get more info about tomorrow night's show!

Hallo there.
We've been touring around the US with Pepper Rabbit for a couple of weeks now; we passed some random questions to each other about touring, guilty pleasures, favorite cities and the like.

Here it goes!

The Submarines pose some ??'s to Pepper Rabbit:

1. What are you reading these days (gear manuals, great American novels, men's room wall philosophers...)?
I've been really into biographies the last few years and have been powering through the works of my favorite people. I recently finished 'Bowie in Berlin' and before that spent a few weeks with Anthony Keidis' biography which was amazing. Right now I'm diving into the Motley Crue book and I have Keith Richards on deck!

2. Are there any songs/albums on repeat in the van on this tour? If so, what might that be?
Any Bowie record, Salem Al Fakir and ton's of Ricky Gervais Show. I've been watching alot of Prison Break on my laptop and recently when my laptop dies, of Montreal is what the boys are listening to

3. Have you heard any good advice lately for touring musicians? Or discovered some secrets of the road you'd like to share?
Always keep a bottle of Tums handy, you tend to eat lots of bad food on the road. And load up on allergy medicine. Spending 6 hours a day in a dusty van causes a lot of sneezing and coughing!

4. What's the thing you look forward to most as you finish up this tour?
The Chelsea FC vs Manchester United match the morning after the last show, and then getting back on the golf course!

5. You guys sound amazing! If you could add any instrument to your live set-up, regardless of how difficult it would be to transport, what would it be?
Thank you! I think that any band with piano in the arsenal always dreams of having an ACTUAL piano on the road, so that might be it for me. But I think a private jet is first on the list of wishes!

Pepper Rabbit inquires of the Submarines:

1. How do you stay healthy and rested on the road? I've noticed you and John are always looking good and chipper whilst we are always have asleep and groggy??
Speed! No, just kidding. I feel like we're always either sleepy or hyper on tour. We try to hone our nap-wherever-you-can skills so that we make up for the lack of sleep at night. Running in the mornings helps, too. Plus, you guys seem just very chill, not comatose--probably a good sustainable gear to be in.

2. If you could only play in one city for the rest of your life, which would it be?
Well I guess we'd have to live in this city...so, I'd say probably Los Angeles or New York for now.

3.  Who has the most annoying 'guilty pleasure favorite album' that you hate listening to in the van and what is it?
Without a doubt, Rebecca Black's 'Friday' has been the repeat offender on this tour. We've switched over to the 'Dylan' version, which is hilarious.

4. When you have a day off, do you try to sight see as much as you can, or just sleep all day?
We get some sleep, but, we're both bad at sleeping in. We usually end up walking and walking and walking around town. Days off are also for eating spicy/interesting food we try not to eat before playing....

5. When you get home, what is the first meal you have? Do you cook it yourself, or is there a favorite restaurant you frequent?
Oo I look forward to things like fresh fruit, yogurt, that kind of thing. I can't wait to go have a nice yuppie meal out, too, with great wine.

Nice talking with you guys. Ok, back to soundcheck for all of us here in Tucson. As I write this little wrap-up, Xander and John are working out a Subs song so Xander can join us On a tune or two. Sounds pretty.

Over and out!

Question The Answers: Joe Sib; Musician, Father, Movie Star? (FILTER Exclusive)

Joe Sib, co-founder of Sideonedummy Records, host of Complete Control Radio and currently performing his one-man show "California Calling" has teamed up with FILTER to deliver a weekly feature we have deemed, "Question The Answers."

So what's the point of all of this? You, the reader, can ask Joe anything and he will answer your questions with his own brand of wisdom. Sometimes intellectual, sometimes hilarious, but always entertaining, you can always depend on Joe to deliver the goods.

Today's story comes in response to a fan question, "Was your (Joe Sib's) band WAX in the Pauly Shore movie, Bio-Dome?"
Of course there had to be a story there and we at FILTER thought that all you kiddies trying to get your band on the big screen could take some notes!

We recommend you listen to Joe talk to get the full Sib experience, but if you are at work, or would rather read his words, look below.

You can also see the clip from Bio-Dome with Joe Sib performing, below!

Q: Was your band WAX in the Pauly Shore movie, Bio-Dome?

A: Wow, you are going back for me with this question. Let me see if my brain can even go back that far...Ok, I am getting images, I see faces, wait there it is... Yes, I was in the movie Bio-Dome with my band WAX.  The rest of you have probably never heard of WAX, right? Don’t worry, you probably have not.  But, I bet you have seen the Spike Jonze video with the guy running down the street on fire. That was WAX; that was my band.  Here is the story of how my band was in Bio-Dome.
WAX got a song on the radio in the mid 90’s called “California.”  The song started to connect in a big way and before we knew it we were on Sunset Boulevard with Spike Jonze lighting a dude on fire and having him run up and down the street. It was insane day that I won’t ever forget.  I mean, this guy was on fire all day!!  Between having our song on the radio and now the video in constant rotation on MTV things were happening for WAX.  In the middle of all this WAX went out on a sold out tour with BUSH (that is another story… next time.)
While we were on the road we were asked to be a part of a Saturday Morning Cartoon Compilation. We choose Rem and Stimpy’s “Happy Happy Joy Joy.”  Why we did this is, I still do not know. The producer of this song was also a music supervisor for a lot of movies.  His gig is always to be looking for new bands and music to place in films. One day while we are in the studio the producer asked “Hey do you guys know who Pauly Shore is?”  We all did our best imitation of the “Wease” and screamed “Fuck ya, we know who Pauly Shore is.” The producer then added, “I am doing the music supervision on Pauly’s new film Bio-Dome and they need a band for it. I want you guys.”
One minute we are singing “Happy Happy, Joy Joy” and the next minute we are on a set at Universal Studio’s with Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin.  It might not be the best movie; alright it is definitely not the best movie, but it was one of the funniest experiences in my life and every once in a while I still get a drunk dial from a friend saying “Sib, its 3AM and we are all watching Bio-Dome. Dude, are you in that movie?”

Thanx Joe Sib!

LOOK: An Essential Guide To Summer Living, Part 2

To catch up, check out Part 1 of the Essential Guide to Summer Living.

To help you prepare yourself for this wonderful time of year, we got a few friends over at Rhythm's SoCal headquarters to help us make a list of things you might want in order to optimize you summer enjoyment.

With all the beautiful weather we’ve been having in Southern California recently we think it's safe to say that most of us are going stir crazy. Whether you’re sitting in an office staring off into distant digital sunsets, or stuck in the classroom taunted by the slow tick of the clock as you feel your skin cooking through the window you know its too nice to be inside.

We have compiled the list below to aid you in achieving the total summer experience no matter your other commitments. Take a break from the social networking site you are currently cruising and read through Part 2 from our two-part series of this essential guide to summer living.

Barefoot in the office
Why
: Minus the obvious health and safety issues going barefoot at the office is, without a doubt, the most official way to make your work day seem like a beach day.

Custom clothing
Why: It's a recession, come on. Not everyone can afford new clothes so kill some time and make your old stuff seem new. Cut off the legs at the ankles or the sleeves at your armpits or the neck.

Pavement - "Cut Your Hair" from Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Surf Cotton
Why:
It displays graphics like cotton but dries way faster allowing you to seamlessly move from your office chair to the beach in the same pair of trunks, plus they are just super comfy and comfort is essential to quality work development.

Asian Markets
Why:
Always good for shock value when you walk by a grocery store and see different things hanging in the windows, and whipped salted ice coffee is the perfect kick start to your afternoon. The foam is pretty much just whipped salt so be careful.

For Moog and Propellerhead, New Websites Focus on Videos, Music Making

Delivered... Peter Kirn | Scene | Fri 6 May 2011 5:19 pm

May has brought two new Web projects from manufacturers – one a titan name from analog hardware, another the king of the software studio. In each, the product itself is downplayed to focus on artists actually making music. That means if you’re looking to kick off your summer music making with a little inspiration, you’ve got some video to watch, and not just the usual gear lust. I don’t think I can be an entirely objective judge of websites, since I do work for The Internet, but that seems like a good trend. (So, yes, I’m not only being partial to Moog and Props here – I always welcome real musical discussion from the folks who make our music tools!)

First off, Moog has a much-welcome rebuild of their previous site, replacing a hard-to-navigate kludge with tiny images. The new site I have to say is one of the best I’ve seen yet from a vendor. Of course, it’s the actual content we still care about. For that, turn to a lavish legacy section. (You can even reminisce about the year 2000 and those heady Big Briar days.)

The nicest feature – back to the idea of getting to the music – promises to be the Sound Studio. First up is The Dandy Warhols, surrounded of course by tasty Moog gear. They have a mixed lineup coming – and don’t worry; that includes the likes of Thereminist Dorit Chrysler, lest you think Moog is abandoning their synthy roots. Now, if they could just find a way to put the pronunciation of their name front and center. (Hint: if you sound like a cow, you’re saying it wrong. Rogue.)

Moog Sound Lab

Propellerhead has a unique approach in May’s “Music Making Month.” Hands-on how-to videos appear first as live webcasts, then on-demand YouTube clips, showing how to get into some real music making. Reason and Record are featured, of course, but the series is as much about production and performance as those tools. Check out the start of the terrific series by Josh Mobley on keyboard finger-drumming, for instance. (Skip a couple of minutes in, and check out Josh’s percussive dexterity.) Artist guests are doing Q&A and video how-to installments on everything from control voltage to sequencing to songwriting, and it looks like there’s a nice artist/tech balance. I like the first week’s videos; tune in for more to come. (This also, though, confirms some of my reservations about the “Like” button; I wouldn’t read too much into those numbers.)

Flux Pavillion lab-tests his latest tune, "Bass Cannon," with some terrifying clinical trials. The video stars Flux with fellow Circus label-mate Doctor P as they tweak knobs in matching lab coats. The Circus camp's sound is definitely penetrating the club circuit: recent YouTube clips of Rusko at Los Angeles' Together As One and of 12th Planet at Miami's Ultra Music Festival are evidence of a well enthusiastic crowd response. Watch out for more Flux Pavilion tracks as rumors of an upcoming album build steam—you can even vote on one of 97 possible titles on Circus Records' Facebook page.

Martin Solveig picks winning remixes

Delivered... Posted by Beatportal | Scene | Fri 6 May 2011 3:13 pm
Between practicing his forehand at the French Open and sneaking onto the football pitch at the Stade du Fance, Martin Solveig has been a busy man. Most recently, he's been judging the entries in his "Hello" remix contest while touring the world non-stop. Solveig is never one to hold back, and this time it was no different. With most of our remix contests, Beatport's editors simply submit 10 finalists for the label to make its final pick. This time, though, the Mixture team listened to every single one of over 800 remixes submitted—about 75 hours of music—to make sure that everyone got his or her fair shot. And now, at long last, Solveig and Mixture have made their final picks. The big news is that, after listening to every single entry, Solveig and Mixture have decided to release five additional remixes, beyond the first, second, and third-place winners. Here's what Solveig has to say: "We’d like to thank everybody who participated and the Beatport crew as well. It’s been a great contest with many very different and interesting visions of 'Hello.' Actually, we didn’t expect so many submissions, and that’s why it’s taken a bit longer than expected, as we listened to all remixes (more than 800) one by one... "Gold digging has never been simple. But it was really worth it! The final choice has not been an easy one: the level was high and the range of styles very broad… So in the end we didn’t choose three but eight remixes, which will all be released in the near future on a special "Hello" remixes EP we’re currently working on, including a few other unreleased remixes by friends. Thanks again for your efforts!" Read on to find out who won!

Premiere on 6th & 9th May: Indian E-music will be broadcasted in Switzerland

Delivered... IE-mAdmin | IEm News | Fri 6 May 2011 12:32 pm

After more than 5 years broadcasting via Tide 96.0 FM (with start in May 2006 for IMC – India meets Classic) its time to expand from our home channel in Hamburg (North Germany) cross national borders to our German language neighbourhood countries.

Compared with the global broadcasting as Internet Radio it’s something very different  if a format is “onair” via local/regional radio stations, herewith directly ‘front the door’ of listeners in Switzerland/Liechtenstein, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Denmark or Poland (which are all regions with German speaking/understanding people).

ElJay’s 1st negotiations began with Switzerland in December 2010. The promotion initiatiave IMC – India meets Classic has contracted now with Radio RaSA (Association Radio Alternative of Schaffhausen) for the next four (4) years with three (3) more hours monthly broadcasting time:

- 1x Indian E-music (every 1st Friday @ 08:00 pm)
- 2x IMC – India meets Classic (every 2nd & 4th Monday @ 10:00 pm).

Radio RaSA is a NGO for Community Radio broadcasting (advertising free) as FM radio (107.2 MHz), via SASAG cable network (106.4) and as Internet radio in the region of Schaffhausen (international famous for the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) and Jazz Festival).

The young history of Radio RaSA goes back to 1993 but this unique radio station managed quickly over the years to establish itself with regular (daily) listeners and a media coverage of ca. 30% of whole population.
