News : In The Bin: Permanent Records’ Top 10 Summer Burners

In The Bin: Permanent Records’ Top 10 Summer Burners

We are now well into August and for some people, that means the hottest days of the year. Dealing with the heat is just part of these hazy summer days. Some people stick poolside, some hole themselves up inside their air conditioned home and some just drive around with their windows down. One thing all these people have in common is that they need some summer tunes to go along with these daily escape rituals. To assist you in the choosing of these albums, we asked our friends at Permanent Records to curate their "Top 10 Summer Burners."

Check out the list below and don’t be shy, stop by Permanent Records in Eagle Rock to talk about their picks!

We are also hosting a pretty amazing vinyl giveaway with some of Permanent Records' favorite artists that are performing at this year's FYF Fest. Click here to enter.

Ty Segall "Slaughterhouse" 2x10" (In The Red)
Many long-time Ty fans were thrown for a loop by his last long-player, "Goodbye Bread".  It was a mellower, more sophisticated record that showed Ty's softer, singer-songwriter side more than any of his previous full-throttled garage blasters.  "Slaughterhouse" isn't a exactly return to form, but rather an extension of the Ty's dark side previously only exhibited on the "Spiders" 7" from last year.  If you're up for a carnal rock 'n' roll ride, this one's well worth flipping all four 10" sides for.

Slug Guts "Playing In Time With The Deadbeat " LP (Sacred Bones)
"Howlin' Gang" was one of my favorite records from 2011, so I've been looking forward to Slug Guts' follow-up all year.  My wait is finally over.  Slug Guts has returned to Sacred Bones for their third LP.  As close followers of the Oz already know, the Australian underground took a major hit this year with the loss of Negative Guest List chief Brendon Annesley.  This loss affected me intensely, so I can only imagine how it affected his close friends and family.  The band also had to deal with some other legal, mental, and physical disasters since their last record.  "Playing In Time With The Deadbeat" reflects these hardships very clearly in its dark, murky pool of gothic swamp punk.

Beck Uses Sheet Music, Illustrations in Place of an Album; Could “Sing it Yourself” Have a Future?

Delivered... Peter Kirn | Artists,Scene | Fri 10 Aug 2012 7:00 pm

Before recording, there was simply music making. When you wanted to hear music, you had to find some actual living, breathing, fleshy musicians to make it happen. “Live” was the only kind of music. And prior to the record album, the mass publication of sheet music was the disruption that built a music industry.

But there’s no reason people can’t get together and play music themselves. So, the first question you might ask, when seeing that Beck is releasing an “album” in the form of a set of sheet music, is, “why not?” And, for music in general, “why not more?”

Working with McSweeney’s, Beck [Beck Hansen] is preparing a release called Song Reader for December 2012. The physical format is also part of the design, including full-color illustrated art and a hardcover carrying case. The publicity for the release somewhat grandiosely says the reader is an “experiment in what an album can be at the end of 2012″ and calls sheet music an “almost-forgotten form.” That claim is fair at least in that it’s sheet music without an accompanying release of a recording. Apart from a work by Bach, that is indeed something different. And the physical object sounds lavish: 108 full-sized pages, all in color, and twelve artists.

(Lest you think Beck is going entirely oldschool and will be releasing music on stone tablets next, he also has a compelling release for the just-released PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita game Sound Shapes, along with our friends Jim Guthrie and I Am Robot and Proud and the ubiquitous Deadmau5. More on that side of the “future of music” later; see the Beck video.)

But what is the state of sheet music, anyway? Well, while it is generally accompanied by recording, it’s not quite forgotten yet. But the market in the United States is being hit hard by recession and music education cutbacks.

A report by market research group IBISWorld, released at the end of last year, reported a time of transition for the industry. That report suggested the kind of transition to digital from print that the record industry has undergone – though this desirably-attractive release from Beck is an excellent example of why releasing on paper can have its own value.

Sheet music faces some challenges that even recording doesn’t. The industry report notes that musicians can turn to YouTube karaoke or instructional videos and avoid looking at scores at all – even before you get into free (often-illegal) guitar tab or file sharing. And music notation itself assumes that people know how to read music, which these alternatives don’t. (There’s a problem recording labels never had to address.)

Notation sales are falling off, though not at the same precipitous rate as recording revenues. In the report, “IBISWorld estimates that industry revenue fell at a 3.9% annualized pace to $339.1 million in the five years to 2011.” The report blames a number of factors, including online competition lowering prices and the aforementioned proliferation of free online alternatives, but also government cuts in the US for arts education and the recession dampening available disposable income.

But if you’re an individual artist, you don’t have to take on these grander trends all at once. Short-run printing is often relatively inexpensive – especially when compared to something prohibitive like cutting your own vinyl release. And note that Beck includes both instrumentals and vocals – meaning not everything has to have lyrics – and uses the release as an opportunity to add additional artists.

The independent artist and label, and a tightly-knit community of DJs and enthusiasts, have helped keep vinyl alive. If sheet music is to enjoy a similar future, it seems likely that it’ll be those same kinds of communities that make it happen.

Weekend Weapons: Craggz & Parallel

Delivered... Posted by Sean Lewis | Scene | Fri 10 Aug 2012 2:00 pm
Devotees of the D&B scene will surely recognize the names Craggz and Parallel. Over the past 15 years, the two have jointly built a fanatic following, formed their own label (Product Recordings), and landed releases with major drum & bass imprints such as Ram. The pair's first collaborative tune of the year, "Musik," appeared on Hospital’s summer-themed compilation—the aptly titled Summer Drum & Bass 2012—and saw the producers elevated to a new level with a soulful, yet intense roller. With its momentum behind them, the duo just released a new EP, Product Placement, which, across four new tracks, finds them displaying their talents with a couple of proven dancefloor formulas while also leaving enough room to expand on the more experimental paths first explored on 2010's Turn The Page LP. Last year we checked in with Craggz & Parallel for a Weekend Weapons and considering their recent flurry of new work, now seemed like the perfect time for an updated version.

This is a prog-rock band from Norway: Titanic. I originally found this track on an old vinyl compilation from Colombia – you can imagine how confusing it was for me when a friend pointed ot that this band comes from north of europe – and not from Medellin – what i originally persumed.

This is actually recorded only two years ago. But it’s really nice to see that Los Wemblers de Iquitos – classic 70′s psychedelic peruvian cumbia band – is still kicking and playing with the same vibe like they used to, back in the days…
