Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale

Breathing under water
Anoushka Shankar (Hindi: अनुष्का शंकर), born June 9, 1981) is a sitar player and composer in the United States. She is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, Indian sitar player, and Sukanya Rajan, a bank employee. Through her father, she is the half-sister of Grammy Award winner Norah Jones. Shankar began training on the sitar with her father as a child, gave a public performance at the age of thirteen, and signed her first record contract at 16. She released her first album, Anoushka, in 1998. Later, in February 2000, Shankar became the first woman to perform at The Ramakrishna Centre in Kolkata. Both Shankar and her half-sister, Norah Jones, were nominated for Grammy awards in 2003. Shankar, in collaboration with Karsh Kale, released Breathing Under Water on 28 August 2007. It is a mix of classical sitar and electronica beats and melodies. Notable guest vocals include her half-sister, Norah Jones, Sting, and Ravi Shankar who performs a sitar duet with his daughter. In 2009, Anoushka started writing weekly columns for HT City, the lifestyle supplement of Hindustan Times. These columns appear online on social network Desimartini.
-------------
Karsh Kale (Marathi: कर्श काळे Kursh Kah-lay) is an Indian American producer, composer and musician, known for melding Indian music with the modern electronic club music of his American upbringing. Kale spent his early years in New York City. He often played tabla with Vishal Bakshi (Vishal Vaid) and Brent Arnesen. He also formed a band named "Bhoom Shankar" with long time allies Ajay Naidu, Shahid Siddiqui and Vishal Vaid. Though they did not release anything officially but the Bhoom Shankar and Future Proof (monthly party started by Kale at Joe's in NYC) happened to be the early sounds of "Asian Massive" referred as a Sub-Genre of Electronica. Apache Indian

Time for Change
Apache Indian is the stage name of the reggae dee jay/toaster, Steven Kapur (born 11 May 1967, Handsworth, Birmingham). Born into a family of Indian origins, Kapur grew up in Handsworth, a racially mixed area with large Black and Asian communities, home of reggae bands such as Steel Pulse, and by the early 1980s he was working with local sound systems and wearing dreadlocks.[1] By the mid-1980s he had trimmed his hair and began to make a name for himself as a dancehall deejay, and he recorded his first single in 1990, "Movie Over India", initially a white-label pressing, until it was picked up by the reggae distributor Jet Star.[1] The single mixed ragga and bhangra and was hugely popular among audiences of both genres.[1] Two further singles followed in a similar vein, "Chok There" and "Don Raja", bringing him to the attention of the major labels, and in 1992 he signed a recording contract with Island Records... Atman (Sao Paulo/Brazil)

Ethernal Dance II
The seeds for the Atman project were sown in 1996, when the artist was deeply involved with Yoga practice and philosophy. The idea of adding music to the vocal mantras used during his practice was born out of a desire to share his love for this Indian tradition. Produced independently with few resources, the first album was ready on early 1997. In July 1997 Eternal Dance is released under MCD World Music.
On early 1998, launches Eternal Dance II, co-produced by Marcelo Gallo. By the end of the year the same album is released on Europe under Amiata Records. The good acceptance of the first two albums in Brazil as well as overseas allows, and demands, a reengineering of both professional and personal life for the artist.
During this transition period, he researches deeply into the works of Joseph Campbell and starts developing what would become the next two Atman albums. 2002 saw the debut of The Lonely Road, first installment of the project that translates to music each step on the hero-journey as described by Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. A year later, The Traveler hits retail as the second and last part of the project. Experiments with fractal and ambient music produced the double CD Darkness & Light under the Sonic Mandalas nom de guerre in early 2004. A few months later a collection of 25 remixes done by artists from all over the world through a remix contest based on the internet is released as India Club & Lounge. A collection of loungy tracks featuring soul, jazz, brazilian and indian influences is released as Chocolate Deluxe using the Taylor M. moniker before the end of the same year.

Badmarsh & Shri

SIGNS
Signs is the Second Collaboration Between Bombay-born, London Raised DJ / Producer Badmarsh and Bombay-born, London Resident / Classically Trained Musician Shri. The First was 1998s Dancing Drums. Although Cuts Such as Swarm, Tribal and Get Up See the Duo Revert Back to the Dancefloor Vibes of Dancin Drums, the Rest of the Album Delves Into Moments of Beatless Bliss and Windswept Beauty. Bally Sagoo

Rising from the East
Bally Sagoo (born Baljit Singh Sagoo) is a British Asian musician and DJ who was born in Ranjit Nagar, Delhi, India, but grew up in Birmingham, England, in a predominantly Black neighbourhood, influenced by disco, rap and Motown music. He gained success as a DJ in the club scene and broke into music by revamping old Bollywood hits and fusing them with hip hop. He is widely credited as one of the original pioneers of what is now modern Indian music, and for triggering the explosion of modern Bhangra pop music (although his music was and is more a fusion of Western dance and hip hop with existing Indian music). This is specifically seen in his 1994 album Bollywood Flashback, followed up with Rising From The East in 1996. Bally runs a production company named Ishq Records that manages several artistes like Bohemia and Gunjan. He has worked twice with the Pakistani pop singer Hadiqa Kiyani. On an international scale, his most famous work features prominently in Gurinder Chadha's film Bend It Like Beckham. He worked together with Amitabh Bachchan for a musical rendition of Harivansh Rai Bachchan's poetry and produced Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's album Magic Touch. (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))

Black Bombay (Toulouse/France)

Black Bombay
Part of the early-2000s worldtronica movement, Black Bombay mixes the concepts of trip-hop with Hindi vocals and a bit of Indian percussion here and there. The vocalists used are quite powerful ones, with voices soaring over the instrumental tracks easily. While the worldtronica trend wasn't exactly new at the time of this album's release (taking its first major steps with "Return to Innocence" years ago), the force behind it was growing rapidly. The sounds here are laid-back journeys through the chord changes and song structures of a basic piece of trip-hop, complete with the usual wordless (or foreign) ambient vocals, but there's a more distinct sense of the Indian influence here. It's an interesting sound, going a little beyond the usual dance infusions with a more tranquil setting for the samples to stretch out in. As would be expected, the tabla becomes an important instrument in the mix, lending its stretches and bounces in tone to the diversity of sound needed to keep an album of this sort interesting. The tempo alone excludes the album from fanship from most of those who follow groups such as Tabla Beat Science, but that doesn't invalidate it from being a decent piece of work. Give it a listen as a representative of the future of trip-hop in a more cross-cultural environment. ~ Adam Greenberg (Source: www.cduniverse.com)

Channi Singh

Makhana
Channi Singh is the godfather of bhangra music in the Western World.[1] Channi is the founder, lead singer, producer, director of Alaap. He came from Malerkotla, Punjab to the UK in 1975 and gradually started the popularity of Punjabi music among the Punjabi youth in the UK, forming the Alaap group in 1977 with other talented musicians. By using both Western and Punjabi folk instruments, the group produced a new and more modern style in Punjabi music, later known as UK Bhangra... (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))

Digital Bled (DJ Joao Pedro Veloso)

Caravana
Digital Bled is the brainchild of João Pedro Veloso Rodrigues, a Portuguese producer/musician/DJ who has lived in Paris since the '70s. The Paris resident, who often goes by DJ Pedro, favors an intriguing, highly percussive blend of electronica (especially trip-hop) and world music. Digital Bled has some subtle South American influences -- namely Afro-Brazilian -- as well as occasional hints of Portuguese music, but its experiments owe a lot more to the Middle East, North Africa, and India. Pedro's interest in music goes back to childhood; he was born in Estoril, Portugal, and he was only a kid when a trumpet-playing neighbor encouraged him to listen to Portuguese music. At 11, Pedro left Portugal with his parents and moved to Paris, where he got into a wide variety of non-Portuguese sounds. After buying a copy of the Shaft soundtrack in a Paris department store, he became seriously interested in '60s and '70s soul music; and he also developed a strong interest in rock (David Bowie and Pink Floyd were among his favorites). As a teenager, Pedro learned to play different instruments, including drums, bass, and guitar. Then, as a young adult, he got into a variety of music-related activities. Pedro became a nighttime salesman for a Paris record store, and he also became a club jock in France's largest city; that was when he started going by DJ Pedro.
It was in the '80s that Pedro got into producing and mixing and learned a lot about electronic music. For several years, Pedro was involved with Paris' hip-hop scene, but he didn't want to be a full-time hip-hopper and ended up mixing soundtracks; not only soundtracks for films, but also the soundtracks of various fashion shows (including the Xuly Bet and Isabel Marant shows). Pedro's Digital Bled project got underway in the '90s, when he started collaborating with raï singer Youcef Boukela. In addition to singing raï -- a funky, Western-influenced style of North African pop that came out of Algeria and is quite popular in Paris' Arabic community -- Boukela is a flexible musician who plays the electric bass and the berimbau (a string instrument that has been heard on a lot of Afro-Brazilian recordings). Boukela was perfect for Digital Bled because, like Pedro, he had a variety of Eastern and Western influences. He shared Pedro's enthusiasm for electronica and trip-hop; Boukela, a member of the Orchestre National de Barbès (ONB), also shared his interest in Middle Eastern, North African, and Indian music. Digital Bled's other participants have included electric bassist Dany'O and Brazilian saxophonist Glaucus Linx, who is known for his work with world music icon Salif Keita. Caravana was released in the United States by Tinder in 2002. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide (Amazon.com)

Dhol Foundation

Big Drum Small World
The Dhol Foundation is both a dhol drum institute in London and a musical group playing bhangra music. The dhol school was founded in 1989 by former Alaap member Johnny Kalsi when several musicians asked him to be their teacher, and a first album was released by Kalsi and his students in 2001 . Dhol drums are a traditional percussion instrument from the Punjab province in the north of India, from which Kalsi originates. In London he experimented with dance beats and electronic music, which he mixes with the traditional bhangra style in his albums. They have had their music in Hollywood films such as Gangs of New York and Incredible Hulk also have done work on soundtracks with Peter Gabriel on films such as Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Last Temptation of Christ. They opened the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. TDF have a connection to Womad, as they own the copyright to all of their songs, and they have also performed at Womad many times of the past few years. In fact, in the past two years, they have played at Womad Reading twice, despite not being scheduled to appear either time. Although officially released in 2005, 200 pre-release 'festival edition' copies the album Drum-Believable were available for those who attended Womad Reading in 2004 as a festival edition. These are now a rarity. (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))

Barefoot Wanderer
Jahcoozi is a project too impossible to categorize. Barefoot Wanderer is all over the board with genres. The dubbed out "Close To Me" cover is amazing. The whole album sounds like what I would have expected Tricky to have been able to pull off. It has heavy elements of dub and IDM, yet there is no element of the Womp, Womp dubstep. It is refreshing and relaxing. If you're looking for that music for the summer of 2010, this is your sound. Jahcoozi is far closer to Kraftwerk than Skream. Just get Lost in Bass. Jay Sean

My Own Way
Kamaljit Singh Jhooti[1][2] (Punjabi: ਕਮਲਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਝੁੱਟੀ (Gurmukhi); born 26 March 1981),[3][4] better known by his stage name Jay Sean, is a British singer-songwriter, rapper, beatboxer and record producer.[4] He debuted in the Asian underground scene as a member of the Rishi Rich Project with "Dance with You", which reached #12 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003. Joi

We are Three
This British-based Asian dance group fuses Indian sounds with Western dance aesthetics, aspiring to create a form of transcendental techno. Joi's sonic agenda involves taking live and sampled instrumentation--tablas, sitars, flutes, vocals--and assimilating them into electronic dance grooves. It's a sonic investment that yields mixed dividends. While Joi insinuate spontaneous playing and some subtle changes into their beat-driven tunes, they generally fall into the repetitive trap of like-minded efforts. "Deep Asian Vibes" stacks up various instruments over house grooves with little regard for melodic or rhythmic progression. And the rambunctious "Tacadin" sounds like the Chemical Brothers with a slight Eastern tinge. Some of the tunes do strive to spiritually uplift, most notably the laid-back grooves of "Triatma" and the subtly hypnotic "Holy Side," which contrasts a bass-heavy rhythm section with nasaly vocals. Unfortunately the frequent lapse into cyclic structures keeps the music from achieving the consciousness-expanding effect the group may desire. Ultimately those seeking exotic refreshment for their feet on the dance floor may be enticed by We Are Three, but those seeking spiritual nourishment amid the grooves may wish to look elsewhere. --Bryan Reesman (Amazon.com)

Kuldip Manak

Kuldeep Manak(Punjabi:ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਮਾਨਕ) is the name of Latif Mohammed (born 15 November 1949). He is a Punjabi singer who is especially renowned for singing a genre of traditional Punjabi songs called kaliyan. Kuldeep Manak was born in the village of Jalal in the Bathinda district. His father, Nikka Khan, was a singer himself. Manak has two brothers: Siddqui, a famous devotional singer, and Rafiq, a tantric, who also hit the headlines fo a while. Kuldeep Manak's ancestors were the hazoori raagis of Kirtan for Maharaja Hira Singh of Nabha (Nabha). Manak being close to Sikhism keeps a Guru Granth Sahib saroop in his home. Manak was the youngest in his class. He completed his matriculation from the village school, where he was a keen hockey player. He had an inclination towards singing from a very young age and was persuaded by his teachers to sing and perform on stage. In 1968, at only 17 years of age, he was given the chance to sing with ‘Seema’, a very popular singer of that period. He is married to Sarabjeet and has two children, a son Yuhdhvir Manak (married) and a daughter Shakti (married). Yudhvir is following in his father's footsteps as an up-and-coming singer from Punjab. He started singing with the famous duo Harcharan Grewal and Seema. When they came to Delhi, a music company official spotted Manak and asked him to record the song Jija Akhian Na Maar Vemain Kal Di Kuri (written by Babu Singh Maan Mararawale) with Seema. His first record features this song along with Laung Karaa Mitran, Machli Paunge Maape (written by Gurdev Singh Mann). This record was a runaway success. He started an office at Bhatinda along with writer Dilip Singh Sidhu, but did not stay there for long and returned to Ludhiana. The famous writer Hardev Dilgir (also known as Dev Thrikewala) spotted Manak at one of his live performances and penned Lok Gathava (English: Old Stories) for him. His first album, Teri Khatir Heere, was released by HMV. In 1976 his first LP was released called 'Ek tara'. Nataraj XT

Ocean Bords (Limited Edition)
Goa trance trio Nataraj XT has its roots in the traditional Indian sound of Nataraj, a duo composed of sarod player Richard "Rishi" Bernet and sitar player Pierre Moitram. When the pair of traditional musicians met techno artist Kapi in 1999, they took him into the band's ranks, changed the group's name, and fused traditional and modern sounds.
Bernet took up the sarod during his student days in California during the early '70s. His time spent at the Ali Akbar Khan Music College inspired him to take a trip to India. Later settling in France, he joined the band Origine. He went on to join the group Lal Ganesh in 1996. The following year he recorded and toured with Massilia Sounds System. Two years later he played with Night in Soho.
Moitram became a student of the sitar under a devotee of Ravi Shankar, Pramod Kumar. He remained in Paris with Kumar from 1972 through 1975. He continued his studies under Debu Chaudhuri at New Deli University from 1975 through 1980.
Kapi is a self-taught drummer, bassist, and guitarist, although in 1979 he did take formal piano instruction. In 1990 he co-founded the group Aproche with Coup D'Etat's guitar player. Five years later he moved on to Venus Anadyomene. For several years he toured as the group's drummer. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide (Amazon.com)

Panjabi MC

Desi
Rajinder Singh (Punjabi: ਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ), better known by his stage name Panjabi MC is a British Indian musician. He was born on 14 February 1979 in Coventry, England. Rajinder Singh adopted his stage name from the Punjabi language he used in the music he plays and raps.[1] "One of [his] main goals is to fuse the two worlds [of bhangra and hip-hop]." Nachural Records signed Panjabi MC following a remix of Kuldeep Manak's "Ghariah Milan De". Although the single was taken off the market, Panjabi MC continued making records. Another successful release was "Mundian To Bach Ke" ("Beware of the Boys") (1998; it first appeared on the album Legalised) which mixed the theme of the TV series Knight Rider with bhangra. An underground hit on the internet, it was picked up by the German record label Superstar Recordings, and became a hit in Germany and across Europe, including the UK. A version of this recording in 2003 featured American rapper Jay-Z named "Beware of the Boys". His work, particularly the early singles and the "Mundian To Bach Ke" remix with Jay-Z, brought bhangra to a global audience via the BBC. He continues to produce music and is ever popular as a collaborator and remixer. In 2004 he made a music called Mirza and mixed this song with Turkish singer Mustafa Sandal's Isyankar, but they did not release the mixed version.[3] His album Indian Timing was released in 2008, the title referring to a young boy in uxbridge who highly influenced him with his brightly coloured turbans and the fact that it has taken a long time for a new album to be released. His music video "Snake Charmer" was also screened at Deejay Ra's music video night in Toronto at the FILMI festival, North America's longest running South Asian film festival. Sheila Chandra

ABoneCroneDrone
Sheila Chandra first came to public attention as an actress, playing Sudhamani Patel in the BBC school drama Grange Hill from 1979 to 1981. As a teenager she formed the band Monsoon, and created a fusion of Western (synthpop) and Indian pop styles. The band consisted of Chandra, Steve Coe (who became the band's producer), and Martin Smith. They made a lone album Third Eye in 1982 from which they had a surprise hit single Ever So Lonely, which peaked at #12 in the UK. They followed-up with the single, "Shakti", which peaked at #41, but this was to be the band's final charting single. The album also includes a cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows", featuring the distinctive EBow guitar sound of Bill Nelson. However, resenting pressure from their record company over musical direction, Monsoon dissolved and Coe and Smith set about promoting Chandra as a solo artist on an independent label. Chandra went on to release a number of albums in the 1980s, at times experimenting with her voice as an instrument through a range of techniques. In the 1990s she released three albums on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, although Martin Smith was no longer actively involved by this time. (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))

Talvin Singh

Anokha Soundz of the Asian Underground
This CD is an outlet for the loose coalition of remixers, DJs, and studioheads known as the Asian Underground (because of their Asian or Anglo-Asian backgrounds). They all put a distinctly Indian spin on this music, with the dhol drum at the heart of the beat, and all the technology on top. Singh's two tracks are things of joy, but nothing here disappoints, whether the modern film music of A.R. Rahman or the drum'n'bass of State of Bengal. --Chris Nickson (Amazon.com)

The Ananda Shankar Experience and State of Bengal

Walking on
Loathe as anyone should be to reinforce vapid cultural clichés, nothing other than shagadelic truly describes this collaboration between pop sitar player Ananda Shankar (nephew of Ravi) and Sam Zaman, the musician and producer known as State of Bengal. Walking On is a sonic journey back to a time when the sitar's sound automatically signified "psychedelic," a time when composer John Barry's sassy film themes were the ne plus ultra of bachelor-pad sophistication. Shankar (who died shortly after completing the album) plays surf sitar, rock sitar, EZ-listening sitar, and German soundtrack sitar (fans of high-speed jazz-rock sitar, however, are directed to Ashwin Batish). Although Shankar's playing sometimes sounds at odds with Zaman's techno beats, the two make a convincing case for "the '90s is the '60s upside down" argument. --Richard Gehr (Amazon.com)

Their music style mixes elements of dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian classical, Middle Eastern, and Brazilian (such as bossa nova) with a lounge aesthetic. Thievery Corporation was formed in the summer of 1995 at Washington D.C.'s Eighteenth Street Lounge. Rob Garza and Lounge co-owner Eric Hilton were drawn together over their mutual love of club life, as well as dub, bossa nova and jazz records. They decided to see what would come of mixing all these in a recording studio, and from this, the duo started their Eighteenth Street Lounge Music record label. (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))

tj Rehmi

The Warm Chill
Rehmi's fifth album is an innovative blend of electronic breakbeats and Eastern melodies fused with chill guitar. It incorporates drum and bass against an exotic chill out landscape. "Rehmi has managed to create a piece of work that redefines the very essence of what a chill album and a Brit Asian album should be...TJ has always made electronica emotional, but this time he's made his studio weep"--BBC Radio (seen at Amazon.com)

VAS

Feast of Silence
Vas was an "alternative world" musical group consisting of Persian vocalist Azam Ali and American percussionist Greg Ellis. Vas is frequently compared to the Australian band Dead Can Dance. At present the band has released four full length albums, and both artists have released a few solo albums and participated in side projects. After their last album Feast of Silence, Ali and Ellis continued on their own separate ways. Azam Ali was raised in India and moved to Los Angeles, California in 1985, where she began studying the dulcimer-like santur under the guidance of Manoochehr Sadeghi. Greg Ellis was born and raised in Los Gatos, California, where he first learned to play the drums at age twelve. Ellis moved to Los Angeles in 1984 and started work as a percussionist. The two musicians met at UCLA in 1995 after hearing each other perform; they formed Vas shortly thereafter. (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))

Veronica Mehta (Miss V)

Theen
Veronica (born Veronica Mehta) is an Indian R&B singer based in London, UK, who sings in Hindi, English and Punjabi. Aged 16, Mehta successfully auditioned for the part of female vocalist for the 2Kool album 2Kool Flavor. She was featured on the track "Sambhala Hai Meine" and has since gone from strength to strength. Mehta gave up her art studies course to pursue her dream of a singing career and teamed up with Rishi Rich to forum VR1, a band and production unit applauded for experimenting with traditional Asian music, remixing, and giving vocals an R'n'B twist. VR1 sold more than 50,000 records in the UK and Europe and earned two Asian Pop Media Awards. After VR1, Mehta joined ePark / Urbanstar and released the single "Girls Gotta Have Fun", with both CDs having various mixes of the title track, as well as the song "Show me Love". Mehta has recorded a few tracks with her new management record company 2Point9, "Indian Girl" featuring Hard Kaur, and the popular "U 'n' I (Mere Dil Vich Hai)", from the Yash Chopra film Hum Tum, a track that Veronica composed herself. Mehta's first album, Theen, was released in 2005. 'Hey Ya' (featuring Juggy D.) was the only single released from the album. After almost a 3 year gap, she released her third single 'Soniya', the video of which is uploaded in high-quality to YouTube. 'Rush' also has a video, though, it is not certain that the song will be released in any formats. Veronica is about to release her sophomore album sometime in 2009. (Source: Wikipedia (ENG))
